Nura Sheidaee, whose mother is from Indonesia and father is from Iran, carries a family name with a special history. Back in 1919, when Iran mandated last names, her grandfather found himself at the registry without a clue of what name to choose. A clerk, who had no children to pass on his own name, asked if he could take his name "Sheida," which means "lover" or "someone in love," and he accepted.
Using a name that people struggle to pronounce or spell can be daunting. Despite the challenges, her name connects her to her roots, and she's learned to embrace it, even if it means being hard to find.
